Abstract

This thesis has been divided into four chapters. Introductory Chapter 1 sets the stage for the scope of this thesis work along with the purpose of the present investigation. The chemistry reported in the literature with the same ligand or similar ligand systems has been highlighted. Chapter 2 consists of two parts Part A and Part B. Using a pyridyl-pyrazole ligand (HL¹), in its deprotonated form, the synthesis, structural characterization and magnetic properties of three polynuclear Cu(II) complexes (dimer, complex 1; tetramer, complex 2; hexamer, complex 3) are described in Part A. Using a potentially tridentate pyridyl-pyrazole ligand (L²) and a potentially tetradentate ligand (L³) two Mn(II) dimers, supported by two acetate-bridges, complex 4 and complex 5 (Figure 3) have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The magnetic behaviour of 4 and 5 have also been investigated. This chemistry is presented in Part B of Chapter 2. Using a bidentate pyridyl-pyrazole ligand (L⁴) synthesis and structural characterization of two linear trinuclear Cu(II) complexes, bridged by 2-pyridinecarboxylate (complex 7) and 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate (complex 8) are described in Chapter 3. Notably, for the mononuclear high-spin complexes [MIII(L⁵)₂]+ (M = Cr, Mn, Fe), the MIII/MII redox potential values (actually Epc (cathodic peak potential values)) linearly correlate well the corresponding couple of metal-hexaaqua comples. This chemistry is described in Chapter 4.
