Abstract
India despite achieving high economic growth post liberalization, there are significant differences in the level of economic growth at a subnational level. In this study we look into convergence at district level using unsaturated nighttime lights data. Although most of the studies agree on state level divergence, there are contradicting views on district level convergence. We find strong evidence of absolute beta-convergence, and at the same time we also find divergence during the same time interval and with the same dataset. Serious assessments of convergence cannot be based on a single measure but rather on a panel of instruments and a sound interpretation of their results, taking into account their complementarities.
