Abstract

The collective cell migration, maintaining intercellular connections and relative positions are seen in the wound healing process of many types of epithelia, such as skin, cornea, respiratory and digestive epithelia. Keratocytes are wound healing cells present in fish skin. Previous studies found out the three differnt types of cells present in keratocyte collective cell migration,Leaders,Followers that are attached to substrate and neighbouring cells, and riders which are cells among followers but not attached to substrate. The presence of riders in collective cell migration are new and provide fresh insights. Here,We have taken a biophysical approach to explore the role of riders in collective cell migration. Their presence is established by confocal imaging studies. Both leaders and followers are in unjammed state with followers are in more unjamming state. Leaders are more circular than followers. The riders doesn’t have a significant effect on the velocity of its leaders. Riders have an energetic advantage over normal followers and keratocyte sheet with them shows less energy consumption than cell sheets without them.
