Abstract

The emerging applications of electric field assisted nanoparticle delivery for theranostics have heightened the importance of understanding fundamental process involved in their transport and uptake into cells. Using a simplified model system of spherical liposomes and experimentally studying the uptake of gold nanorods in them, the dependence of physical characteristics of nanoparticles (conductivity, polarization, zeta potential) and overall pulse parameters of applied field on uptake is sought. These experiments would complement basic models explaining nanoparticle transport in presence of electric fields and test their limitations. The present thesis describes attempts to synthesize functionalized gold nanorods in order to build the setup required for conducting the aforementioned experiments. The thesis is divided into five sections. The first two sections give an idea of recent advances in biomedical applications of nanoparticles complemented by electroporation. They also state the motivation and question of interest. The primary work is explained in the next two sections of Synthesis and Functionalization, comprising methods and results. Lastly, Future directions gives an idea of how the present work could be and should be taken forward in the interest of primary objectives. Three interludes are included which describe events of importance, but which don’t form a part of the main narrative. Passive voice is avoided wherever an emphasis towards the agent (the author) is desired.
