Abstract
In this project the constraint analysis of degenerate Lagrangians were studied in both Dirac’s Hamiltonian formalism and Lagrangian formalism. And how using these algorithm one can find the degeneracy conditions for avoiding Ostrogradsky instability in higher derivative theories with multiple regular and special variables were studied for both classical mechanical and field theoretic systems. And also how Lorentz invariance prevents the propagation of non-integer degrees of freedom in partially degenerate scalar field theories were studied. And this calculation was extended to Lagrangians which has dependency on up to third time derivative of the scalar field.
