Abstract
People experiencing depersonalisation often describe emotional numbing as the hallmark of the condition. Altered emotional experiences include diminished emotional responses to emotional stimuli and events. Based on previous research, we hypothesise that individuals with frequent depersonalisation episodes will report less emotionally intensive experiences when subjected to strong emotion eliciting stimuli. We conducted online experiments with 187 participants and evaluated their emotional experiences by self-reports of emotion intensity after watching emotion-inducing videos. Using cumulative mixed-effect modelling, we observed that the intensity responses vary in emotion categories, and so does their interaction with CDS scores. Specifically, these findings highlight the complexity of emotional numbing as a symptom of depersonalisation and indicate the need to study the emotional aspect with multiple affective dimensions.
