Abstract

Microbial contamination and infections are a severe threat to human health. In particular, Gram-positive bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus can cause serious infections, pneumonia, and bone or joint infections. Therefore, the development of effective antimicrobials is a pressing need for better animal welfare. Towards this direction, a series of cationic cross-linked systems were synthesized through a Thiol-Ene photo click reaction between the olefinic bond of the dicationic acrylate derivative and the thiol unit of the cross-linker. Click chemistry is a very productive approach in synthetic chemistry since it is stereospecific, simple to perform, broad in scope, and notably high yielding. Various dicationic acrylate-based monomers and the corresponding cross-linked network structures were synthesized by varying the distance between two quaternary ammonium units, and the successful synthesis was thoroughly characterized using several spectroscopic techniques like 1H, 13C NMR, and FT-IR. Further, the aggregation behavior of each networked system was analyzed using Dynamic Light Scattering(DLS), and the morphology of the nanoaggregate was observed using Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM). The positive Zeta potentials of these nanoaggregates were determined to directly help to interact with negatively charged bacterial cell walls through electrostatic interaction and eventually inhibit the bacterial growth or kill bacteria.
