Abstract

Iron(III) choro complexes have the ability to undergo visible light induced homolysis through the ligand to metal charge transfer transition, leading to a chlorine radical generation. The utility of the chlorine radical as a hydrogen atom transfer reagent for the chemoselective oxidation of benzylic positions of methyl arenes to aldehydes, and diaryl methylene to ketones was studied. The underlying mechanism of the oxidation was explored by several control experiments to investigate the reaction intermediates. The structure of the active catalyst was solved by single crystal XRD.
