Abstract

The thesis contains five chapters. Chapter 1 illustrates about the source, classifications, biological and therapeutics significance of carbohydrates in various life process. It also introduced with a new domain of study called “Glycomics” that deals with the chemistry and biology of carbohydrates. Chapter 2 demonstrates the importance of the reducing end glycosides and its further application as conjugates. The chapter reviews the literature reports on glycosylation and different kind of common glycosides frequently used for anomeric protection and their utility aspects in the field of synthetic carbohydrate chemistry. Chapter 3 illustrates chemical synthesis of rare D-Fuc3NAc containing tetrasaccharide repeating unit of the O-antigenic polysaccharide from Escherichia coli O74 in the form of its 2-aminoethyl glycoside. Chapter 4 illustrates chemical synthesis of β-D-Man2NAc containing pentasaccharide repeating unit of the exopolysaccharide from Lactobacillus rhamnosus BIM B-1039 in the form of its pmethoxyphenyl glycoside. Chapter 5 deals with the total chemical synthesis of the trisaccharide repeating unit related to Salinivibrio sp. EG9S8QL containing α 4-O-[1-carboxyethyl] D-mannose moiety.
