Abstract
The thesis explores the formation of topological defects (with particular emphasis on cosmic strings) in the early universe and their implication in cosmology. We start by reviewing how topological defects come into existence via phase transitions from both Condensed Matter Physics and Particle Physics perspectives. We then discuss the mathematical tools, like Topology, Homotopy & Loops, needed to understand defects. The focus then shifts to cosmic strings, which are one-dimensional topological defects that can generate a significant amount of gravitational radiation. We discuss the physics of cosmic strings and their dynamics using the Nambu-Goto Action and how they can generate gravitational radiation. Finally, the thesis proposes future directions in the study of topological defects and gravitational radiation, including the formation of string networks from a thermal inflation & whether the strings from such a senario collapse to give rise to Primordial Black Holes.
