Abstract

Pseudomonas aeruginosa can be found growing in a variety of habitats like soil and water but can also act as an opportunistic pathogen. It has been used as a model for research because of its role in nosocomial infections as in cystic fibrosis, pneumonia, wounds, implants, etc. Its lethality is due in part to its ability to form biofilms. The biofilm mode of life confers protection against stressors like antibiotics, immune system of the host, etc. [1]. It is thus important to understand the mechanism of biofilm formation in order to develop better treatment protocols. Lantana camara was introduced in many countries as an ornamental and hedge plant but has now become an invasive weed. Therefore, it is easy and affordable to obtain its extract. Its extract has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against species like Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, etc. Thus, we wanted to check the antibacterial activity of Lantana camara leaf ethanolic extract against Pseudomonas aeruginosa KPW.1-S1 and study its effect on biofilm formation. We found that high concentrations of the ethanolic extract of Lantana camara leaves reduce the planktonic population. However, the biofilm load along with the exoprotein and eDNA content of biofilms also increased at those concentrations. We also saw an increased expression of algD and fapC.
