Abstract
A small molecule-based phosphodiesterase mimic whose activity can be controlled using an external light source has been synthesized in this work. Due to the presence of azobenzene photoswitch as the core, the molecule can switch between E and Z forms using different wavelengths of light. Since the catalytic residues are coming closer in Z form, the catalysis was happening effectively in Z form. In contrast, the considerable distance between the catalytic residues causes the E form to be catalytically inactive. Using an external light source, the molecule can be switched between the Z and E forms, activating or deactivating the enzyme. Preliminary catalysis studies showed that the Z form catalyzes the reaction >10 times compared to the background reaction or E form of the catalyst.
