Abstract
The aim of this report is to explore different definitions of characteristic classes and their role in the study of bundles. The basics of bundle theory are introduced in the first chapter, where the reader gets to see some classification results. The second chapter provides the topological approach to characteristic classes. The last two chapters discuss the geometric definitions of characteristic classes. We also explore the classification of flat principal G-bundles and some theory on Chern-Simons invariants. Finally, we have included a small discussion to motivate the mathematical modeling in the physics of particle interactions which uses the theory we developed in this report.
