Abstract

Chapter 1: The sources of carbohydrates and their implications for various life processes are discussed in this chapter. It also describes the classifications of carbohydrates in respect of their structural complexity. Use of carbohydrate-based therapeutics are also touched upon. Chapter 2: Mechanism and development of strategies for glycosidic bond formation are discussed, aspects of stereo- and regioselectivity issues are illustrated with emphasis on glycosyl halides, thioglycosides and glycosyl trichloroacetimidates. Chapter 3: This chapter illustrates the efforts towards the synthesis of the pentasaccharide repeating unit of the S. pneumoniae 15F CPS in the form of its 2-aminoethyl glycoside. Accomplishment till the protected tetrasaccharide through rational protecting group manipulations and stereoselective glycosylations is presented in detail. Plan for the remaining synthesis is discussed as future work.
