Abstract

The bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis has great importance in agriculture for its ability to generate proteinaceous crystals called Cry proteins, which have immense insecticidal properties. Various environmental conditions determine its swarming motility and biofilm formation on plant surfaces, and its virulence towards plant-attacking insects. With increasing glucose concentrations, a significant rise in the biofilm load of KPWP1 was evident, whereas swarming motility reduced considerably. Previous studies have shown changes in gene expression profiles during biofilm formation and swarming motility in other strains of B. thuringiensis. Similar findings are expected for KPWP1. The present study also includes a minireview titled “Interplay between swarming and biofilm formation abilities in bacteria and its implication in bacterial survival and therapeutics.”
