Abstract

Two-dimensional vortex lattice flow serves as a simple model for flows driven by convection or flows realized in various experiments. We study the steady-state distribution of microswimmers in the vortex lattice flow, which is dependent on the shape and motility of the swimmers. By computing the stability of particle trajectories for different initial conditions, we discover that depending on the parameters’ value, one or at most two different domains exist in the phase space. The two domains correspond to trapped and untrapped swimmers. Thus, the steady-state density distribution is formed by these two groups of swimmers - trapped and untrapped. We find a strange attractor in the phase space formed by a sea of untrapped swimmers and characterize the dimension of this attractor. iv
