Abstract

The urgent need to prevent the adverse effects of increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide levels has intensified the field of photocatalytic CO₂ reduction. This thesis focuses on understanding the electrochemical and photophysical behaviour of these complexes to elucidate their potential as effective photocatalysts for CO₂ reduction. In this project, a trimetallic Re(I)–Ru(II)–Re(I) complex was designed and synthesised, and its detailed spectroscopic, photophysical, and electrochemical properties were explored. Here, the heterometallic centres act as two different functional moieties. Preliminary photocatalytic experiments were conducted under controlled light irradiation conditions to assess the potential as a CO₂ reduction catalyst. The formation of CO was monitored to evaluate the catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability of the complex. This supramolecular system shows excellent potential for photocatalytic activity against CO₂ reduction even in presence of low concentration of 1-benzyl-1,4-dihydronicotinamide (BNAH). These results serve as the foundation for future optimisation and development of the complex as an efficient photocatalyst for CO₂ conversion.
