Abstract
This thesis deals with the synthesis and characterization of Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes of salphen, thiasalphen and thiasalen ligands. Chapter 1 deals with the general introduction based on recent literatures. Chapter 2 deals with the synthesis and characterization of Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes of salphen, thiasalphen. Salphen ligand was synthesized by condensation of o-phenylenediamine with salicylaldehyde, followed by complexation with metal salts to get square planner geometry around the metal centers of Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes. To synthesize thiasalphen complexes of Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II), disulfide was reduced to 2-formylthiophenol and reacted with Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) salts and o-phenylene diamine. Packing pattern of these compounds have been studied by X-ray crystallography. Chapter 3 comprises synthesis and characterization of Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes of fluorine substituted salphen. Here we incorporate fluorine into our molecule as being of its electron withdrawing nature. Packing pattern of these compounds have been studied by X-ray crystallography The strong electron withdrawing groups led the transition from p-channel to n-channel OFETs. Chapter 4 includes synthesis and characterization of Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes of thiasalen ligand. We are in process to study these metalloorganic compounds as materials for organic field-effect transistors (OFETs).
