Abstract

In this report, we study gravitational waves and their backgrounds. We start by studying gravitational waves as perturbations in at spacetimes, seeing how the information about the gravitational waves is contained in a small number of degrees of freedom. Then we go on to study phase transitions and the order parameter brie y, before introducing a model that shows phase transitions with nite temperature eects. We also dene and explain bubble nucleation, which is required for the phase transitions we study. We then look at why gravitational wave backgrounds are stochastic in nature.Lastly, we look at some of the sources that cause a stochastic wave background.
