Abstract
This project entitled “A novel dipeptide based supramolecular gelator” discuss the synthesis, characterization, morphology, spectroscopic studies and applications of small peptides. The main focus of this thesis is (i) design and synthesis of small peptides, (ii) study the effect of their structure, self-assembly, organogelation and hydrogelation, (iii) application of peptide. The organogelation property of the terminally protected dipeptide (L-Ala–L-Phe) has been reported. Organogelation was studied in aromatic solvents such as toluene, xylene, chlorobenzene, dichlorobenzene. The MGC value (minimum gelation concentration) for toluene is 8 mg/mL. The magnitude of storage modulus of the gel was higher than the loss modulus and that indicates the elastic nature of the gel and the physical crosslink. The gel exhibits twisted fibers and a dence fiber network and that is equilibrated by non-covalent interactions, and those are hydrogen bonding amd π–π interactions and hydrophobic interactions. The 4-biphenylcarboxy capped dipeptide form hydrogel in presence of selective base like NaOH, KOH, LiOH. Other metal salts like Fe, Cu, Zn was also tried but they are not able to form gel. From rheology, the magnitude of storage modulus of hydrogel was higher than loss modulus and that indicates the elastic nature of the gel and the physical crosslink. FE-SEM of the xerogel displays a fiber network and that is responsible for capturing the water molecules and form gel. So we can say that the 4-biphenylcarboxy capped dipeptide provide pH responsive supramolecular hydrogel.
