Abstract

Indistinguishability of non-orthogonal states and the no-cloning theorem are two very important and unique characteristics of quantum mechanics. However, for a composite quantum system, even orthogonal states can not be distinguished and cloned if the parties are allowed to perform only the local operation and classical communication. In this project, the aim is to study the local distinguishability of a set of pure quantum states and local cloning for two-qubit orthogonal bipartite states. Some strong results have been presented in detail that restrict the structure of a set of states in order to be locally distinguishable. The constraint on resources for local cloning operation has also been extensively presented for two-qubit maximally entangled Bell states. For a locally indistinguishable set of states, global measurement reveals more information than any LOCC. This is a nonlocal behavior, which along with a stronger version of nonlocality for product states, has been discussed in detail. For 1 copy to 2 copies and 1 copy to 3 copies cloning for any four Bell states, two protocols have been provided in a different way than the original paper by Ghosh et al.
