Abstract
Polymers are all around us and have significantly advanced numerous scientific fields over the past century. However, a major challenge is ensuring their biocompatibility, especially for biomedical applications. In the field of biosensing, it is particularly rare to find materials that are both luminescent within biological media and responsive to external stimuli. To address this challenge, water-soluble, thermoresponsive luminescent polymers have recently gained much attention. Thermoresponsive polymers are a class of stimuli-responsive polymers that can change their physical or chemical properties with thermal stimuli. Conventional luminogens are typically water-insoluble and cytotoxic due to π-π conjugation, aromatic groups, and high hydrophobicity. In this regard, water-soluble non-conventional luminogens have great potential due to their tunable emission property and low cytotoxicity. Non-conventional luminogens do not have any π conjugated architecture; their emissive property mainly depends on the presence of electron-rich heteroatoms and cluster formation.
