Abstract

This thesis investigates the Waiting Time Distributions (WTD) of electrons in mesoscopic systems under distinct voltage biases. We start by considering the case of a beam of non-interacting electrons under a constant DC bias passing through a scatterer. The WTD follows a Wigner-Dyson distribution for full transmission, which arises due to fermionic correlations. We attempt to understand the physical significance of this distribution by considering different forms of interactions between the particles and isolating the effect of fermionic correlations, and study the crossover from Poisson statistics to Wigner Dyson upon increasing transmission Notably, for a two-particle system, the WTD exhibits anomalous behavior, prompting further exploration using an alternative framework involving Lorentzian voltage pulses. We find the distribution for both the 2-particle and the multi-particle case, and model this system on a lattice to see the small-scale structure of our detections. Lastly, we introduce spin selectivity into the system, examining how the alignment between electron spins and the detector’s polarization axis influences the WTD.
