Abstract
This thesis delves into the synthesis, analysis, and photocatalytic performance of two innovative lead-free two-dimensional Ruddlesden–Popper (RP) perovskite materials: ethanolamine copper bromide (EACB) and propylamine copper bromide (PACB). Aiming to provide environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional lead-based halide perovskites, these copper-containing compounds were synthesized using slow cooling method and thoroughly examined through various techniques, including PXRD, IR, Raman, SEM-EDS, UV–Vis, PL, TCSPC, XPS, and UPS, which helped us understand their structural, optical, and electronic properties. When tested for photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction (CRR) under visible light in toluene, it was found that EACB generated both CO and CH₄, while PACB showed a greater preference for producing CO. This variation in performance is attributed to the differences in the organic spacer cations, which play a key role in influencing charge transfer dynamics, surface interactions, and the stabilization of reaction intermediates. The XPS analysis confirmed the involvement of Cu(I)/Cu(II) redox activity, reinforcing the multi-electron reduction pathway identified in EACB. The results showcase the potential of RP-type hybrid copper halide perovskites as sustainable, lead-free options for CO₂ conversion and lay the groundwork for future studies focusing on refining crystal structures, introducing dopants, and developing advanced hybrid photocatalysts.
