Abstract

Chapter 1 introduces the reader to the extensive discipline of enzymes. The structurally important aspects of an enzyme have been discussed. This has been followed up with a discussion of the existing classes of enzymes with major emphasis on hydrolases and glycoside hydrolases in particular. The chapter has been concluded with a review of the important discoveries made till date about the glycoside hydrolase, lysozyme. Chapter 2 builds up on the topic of the thesis by going into the synthetic aspects of this discipline, artificial enzymes. A brief description about an artificial enzyme has been followed up with the various works done in this interdisciplinary field. Different enzyme mimics corresponding to the major enzyme classes have been touched upon. This has been succeeded by a succinct description of the phenomenon of photochromism and the array of compounds which show this behaviour. Some applications of azobenzene derivatives in the field of bio-organic chemistry have also been discussed. Chapter 3 deals with the experimental section where the construction of the various chemical moieties and their subsequent spectroscopic studies, towards the realization of an enzyme mimic, has been described in detail. The catalysis pathway for both the unperturbed and the photoisomerised form of the azobenzene derivative has been established. Michaelis Menten parameters have been determined and they have been compared with the values for natural enzyme systems. Chapter 4 concludes the thesis with a summary of the work done and the drawbacks still persisting in the system. The possible solutions to these drawbacks, as future work to this thesis, have been described.
