Abstract
Synthetic chemistry has played a pivotal role in the progression of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, medical sciences, and functional materials over history, with numerous benefits to humanity. Similarly, contemporary research has prioritized the development of environmentally friendly and sustainable approaches. Chemists are now exploring methods that utilize readily available catalysts and feedstocks to minimize ecological impact. In this context, acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling (ADC) and transition metal-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation (TH) have emerged promising techniques for enhancing molecular complexity. TH offers significant advantages as it eliminates the need for hazardous hydrogen gas and high-pressure equipment typically associated with unsaturated compound hydrogenation. Moreover, it operates under mild conditions. Similarly, ADC reactions produce only water and hydrogen as byproducts, making it environmentally benign. Additionally, there is potential for ADC to serve as a clean energy source. In recent years, extensive research has been conducted on TH and ADC reactions using various precious transition metal catalysts. However, from a sustainability standpoint, replacing these precious metals with more abundant and less harmful base metal (3d) catalysts presents a tantalizing yet challenging prospect. Manganese emerges as a compelling option due to its abundance, lower cost, reduced toxicity, and widespread presence in biological systems. This thesis primarily focuses on manganese-catalyzed hydrogen transfer (hydrogenation and dehydrogenation) mediated reactions to enable downstream CC- and CN-bond forming reactions to produce value-added chemicals. Besides, it also focused on the production of hydrogen fuel.
