Abstract
This thesis entitled “SYNTHESIS OF AROMATIC AMINO ACID ANALOGUES AND PEPTIDE: STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION” discuss the synthesis, characterization, conformational analysis, morphology, spectroscopic studies, and applications of aromatic amino acid analogues and peptides. The main focus of this thesis are (i) design and synthesis of the aromatic amino acid analogues and peptides (ii) their spectroscopic analysis (iii) their respective applications on amine sensing and photo switching properties. The thesis describes the synthesis of an ester of an amino acid analogue synthesized under unusual Mannich reaction conditions in presence of Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate (SDS) surfactant whose role is to form aqueous micelles which increases the solubility of reactants and thus minimizes the formation of side products using boric acid. A number of tertiary aromatic amines reacted smoothly to yield condensed products in the presence of boric acid. This ester of the amino acid analogue showed selective sensing towards hydrazine hydrate and benzylamine which was confirmed by different spectroscopic and morphological studies. The thesis also elaborates the design principle and synthesis of a dipeptide using an amino acid analogue prepared via Knoevenagel reaction under microwave irradiation which is considered as a green approach and tyrosine. The concentration dependent spectroscopic studies were then done for the peptides to detect their aggregation and also as the peptides consisted of a double bond it was expected to show switching from trans to cis under light irradiation and thus different spectroscopic studies were performed to demonstrate its photo switching activity.
