Abstract

Amino acid-based synthetic polymers can be prepared from amino acid based vinyl monomers prepared from –COOH or –NH2 group modification followed by conventional free radical (FRP) or controlled free radical polymerizations (CRP). Our work focuses on the synthesis of amino acid based vinyl monomers via –COOH functional group modification, followed by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) to form synthetic polymers with amino acid side-chain pendants. We have synthesized pH responsive homopolymers, block copolymer, statistical copolymers, and hyperbranched and star polymers to study the effect of chain architecture on the pH responsive property and pH induced self assembly behaviour. We have also prepareed side chain amino acid based dynamic and chemically cross-linked gels to study their structure property correlation.
