Abstract
The thesis focuses on the synthesis, photophysical studies, cellular imaging potential as well as protein sensing capability of cyclometalated heteroleptic iridium(III) complexes. These complexes are highly efficient in imaging of cells and cellular organelles, and are important tools for studying cellular function. The cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes provide a number of important advantages over these currently available small-molecular dyes, fluorophore-conjugated antibodies or fluorescent proteins as imaging agents. However, the major challenge in the field of cellular imaging is the selective staining of specific cell organelles or sub-cellular compartments. Thus, rational design of cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes with specific subcellular localization properties is very important. The thesis contains five chapters. The chapter I contains a brief introduction on the previous reports of cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes and their application in various fields like cellular imaging, sensing, optical probes, catalysis, etc. The chapter II, deals with the synthesis, photophysical studies, cellular imaging and specific localization of endoplasmic reticulum by cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes. The chapter III, contain the synthesis, photophysical studies and cellular imaging of five cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes with phenyl imidazole and phenyl triazole as the cyclometalating ligand and 2- (1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline-2-yl)phenol ancillary ligand. The synthesis, photophysical studies and cellular imaging studies of four cyclometalated iridium(III) and rhodium(III) complexes with Schiff base ligands containing N∩N donor site are presented in chapter IV. Chapter V deals with the synthesis of two cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes with mannose and β-galactoside appended 2,2'-bipyridyls as ancillary polypyridyl ligand and acts as sensor for protein Concanavalin-A.
