Abstract

The thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter gives a brief introduction on polymers. The second chapter is devoted to a discussion on the behaviour of polymers in solutions. The third chapter highlights the important structural and other relevant properties of the polyelectrolytes, i.e., polymers carrying charges, in good and poor solvents. In this chapter we also recapitulate the coil-globule phase transition of polyelectrolytes in poor solvents. In the last and the fourth chapter we describe a new aspect of the coil-globule phase transition of polyelectrolytes (phase coexistence). In this work we consider the coexistence of the coil and globule phases within a single charged polymer chain. The stability of this coexistence is investigated using a new model.
