Abstract
This investigative project has been a sincere effort to explore the possible therapeutic applications of the bacterial secondary metabolite Phenazine 1-carboxylic acid (PCA) upon breast cancer, using the Human breast cancer cell line MCF-7 as the experimental model. Both natural and synthetic phenazine derivatives are studied widely due to their impacts on bacterial interactions, biotechnological processes, broad-spectrum antibiotic properties, roles in virulence. Recent studies have started to shed light upon it's underexplored anticancer activity. We employed different techniques to check the apoptotic activity of the drug in the MCF-7 cells. These started by observing the morphological changes, later studying nucleus, cell cycle arrest and finally apoptosis. We were able to conclude that the cell death is evident after treatment of the drug, in both dose and time dependent manner, although the mechanism of cell death is convincingly not apoptosis. Further insights into the exact mechanism and target-specificity needs to be executed.
