    Abstract

N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) is used for the oxidative polymerization of styrene at 25-100 psi oxygen pressure at 35-55 oC. The rates of oxidative polymerizations are determined from the oxygen consumption (Δp) against time plot and NHPI showed several fold increased reaction rate compared to the conventional free radical initiator, 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN). Kinetics of the oxidative polymerization reactions have been studied at various concentrations of oxygen, NHPI, AIBN and monomer. The polymerization rate of styrene was almost same when NHPI analogue N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHSI) was employed. The mechanism of oxidative polymerization in the presence of NHPI is suggested on the basis of kinetic data and characterization of poly(styrene peroxide) (PSP). The NHPI is efficient in initiation for the oxidative radical polymerization of styrene. NHPI is utilized for the oxidative polymerization of methyl methacrylate at 50 psi oxygen pressure at 50 oC. The rate of oxidative polymerization is determined from the oxygen consumption (Δp) against time plot.
