Abstract
In our present study, transesterification reaction for waste edible oil using CuFe₂O₄ as heterogeneous catalysts has been performed. A CuFe₂O₄ (M= Mn, Cu, Ni, Zn) heterogeneous nanocatalyst was prepared using co-precipitation method and its optimized catalytic performance has been evaluated. The synthesized MFe₂O₄ was characterized using SEM and XRD. The obtained biodiesel was confirmed using ¹H NMR and FTIR analysis. In this study, transesterification reaction of MFe₂O₄, effect of catalyst concentration, temperature and oil to methanol ratio on the transesterification reaction was investigated. It was concluded that CuFe₂O₄ shows highest catalytic activity amongst all MFe₂O₄ mixed metal oxides used in this work. Based on experimental results, catalyst concentration of 10 wt %, oil to methanol molar ratio of 1:12 and temperature of 60⁰C were found to be optimum for transesterification reaction. Moreover, the catalysts exhibited high catalytic activity (92%) with high reusability for biodiesel production.
