Abstract
In this thesis we have described in detail a method for preparing long-lived singlet states. The method was realized experimentally in the laboratory which prove that singlet states indeed have an order of magnitude slower decay rates than other states in solution NMR. The life-times of the singlet states could have been increased by substituting all hydrogens other than the ones of interest by deuterium atoms. The draw back of exactly setting the carrier frequency at the mean of the two chemical shifts could be avoided by using the pulse sequences proposed by Sarkar and others using magnetic field gradients. The singlet states thus generated could be used to study slow biological processes and also for quantum computation.
