Abstract
Monitoring As(III) affected water bodies on a regular basis requires a reliable, simple and cost effective testing method. In this work, we have designed and synthesized fluorescein-derived monomer (FT) and it’s polymer (Poly-Nor-OR) which is first example of a chemodosimeter for simple and efficient detection of As(III) in aqueous environment. The sensitivity and selectivity of the monomer and it’s polymer towards As(III) among different metal ions were investigated by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Complexing with As(III) ion leads to spirolactam ring opening of FT and consequently causes a color variation from colorless to pink. The detection limit was found to be 3.94 x 10⁻¹¹ M. FT is capable of sensing As³⁺ colorimetrically and fluorimetrically and displays sub-ppb detection limit.
