Abstract

This thesis consists of synthesizing new abnormal N-heterocyclic carbene ligands and their palladium (II) complexes for decarboxylative C-C cross coupling reactions of N-methylindole-2-carboxylic acids with aryl halides. The thesis begins by discussing the importance of heteroaromatic biaryl compounds. The advantages of decarboxylative C-C coupling reaction over traditional cross-coupling reactions in synthesis of biaryl moieties, previous catalysis reports for C2-arylation of N-methylindoles via decarboxylative cross coupling as well as their limitations are briefly outlined. The motivation for doing this project and our objectives are delineated. Finally, our experimental results and future directions of the work are described.
