Abstract
The concentration of asphaltenes in the bitumen plays a significant role on the properties of bitumen. The softening point increases and the penetration value decreases with increase in the asphaltene concentration. The stiffness of the bitumen increased with the concentration of asphaltenes. The oxidative studies of maltenes show that rate of formation of asphaltenes from maltenes increases linearly with time. The “new” asphaltenes formed on oxidation of maltenes were chemically and structurally different from asphaltenes originally present in the bitumen as confirmed by XRD, elemental analysis and thermogravimetric analysis.
