Abstract
A gain higher than 3x10⁴ and energy resolution of 7% was obtained for a triple GEM detector procured from CERN. An initiation has been made for discharge studies in GEM. Extensive study on ex- perimental setup of the triple GEM has been done as a part of this thesis. CAEN HV Power Supply has been used for data acquisition. The power supply was accessed remotely through an IP connection using a C program which inherited from the CAEN HV Wrapper Class to exercise control over the machine remotely. Sparks were observed and patterns were observed in the discharge in the triple GEM from the logged voltage and current values. In addition simu- location studies on a novel idea of replacing environmental unfriendly CF₄ with N₂ has been tried out.A calculation for thickness of a copper cage to be used for radiation sheilding purposes in the lab has been done.
