Abstract
A novel perylene based diimide(Py-PDI) having a picolyl group at one end and a solubilizing hexyl-heptyl chain at the other end was synthesized and its aggregation properties were studied with the help of UV-Vis Spectroscopy in various chloroform/methylcyclohexane(MCH) solvent mixtures. In order to substantiate the fact that lone pair plays a role in promoting aggregation, a control molecule was also synthesized having a benzyl group(B-PDI) instead of picolyl group. It was seen that nitrogen lone pair actually plays a role in promoting aggregation and the propensity of aggregation increases more than 10 folds with the incorporation of lone pair in the molecule. Finally, the mechanism of self assembly was studied from the Temperature dependent UV-Vis spectroscopy. It was seen that the Py-PDI follows an Isodesmic pathway of aggregation.
