Abstract
Present-day agriculture method reveals an upwards trend in the usage of pesticides and fertilizers in order to fulfill the ever-increasing demand of the ever-increasing population. In recent times, statistics reveal that India has grown its agricultural output by 100% while the increase in cropping area has only been 20%. This disproportionate increase in the agricultural output is largely attributed to the usage of a high amount of pesticides. While the usage of pesticides has resulted in the increase of agricultural output, the harmful effects of the residual remains of these chemicals have proven to be highly adverse to our ecosystem, especially for aquatic life. The present study was chosen to know the level of organochlorines and organophosphate contamination in groundwater of Bolpur Block, Birbhum district, West Bengal, India.
