Abstract

Reaction of a series of Schiff bases with [Ru(CO)2(PPh3)2Cl2] affords a family of complexes of ruthenium(II) of various composition The thesis can be divided into two different parts depending on the schemes. Scheme 1: Schiff bases have been synthesized by condensation of 1,2-Phenylenediamine with Benzaldehyde, Methyl-4-formylbenzoate, 3-Nitro benzaldehyde, 4-Hydroxy benzaldehyde, 2,3-Dihydroxo benzaldehyde, o-Vanillin and Ethyl-4-formylbenzoate. An unusual transformation of ligands through C-H activation and subsequent hydrolysis has happened upon reaction with [Ru(CO)2(PPh3)2Cl2]. The ligands afford two complexes [Ru(CO)2(PPh3)2(Ln)2] and [Ru(CO)2 (PPh3)(Ln)]2 [n= 1-7], a dimerized unit with the removal of two Triphenylphosphine units and simultaneous formation of metal-metal bond. The formation of the Ru-Ru bond assumes significance as it has possibly been formed through an unusual mechanistic pathway in absence of base. All the synthesized compounds have been thoroughly characterized by spectroscopic techniques. Scheme 2: Schiff bases have been synthesized by condensation of Terephthaldehyde with 2-Aminophenol and p-Phenylenediamine with 5-Chlorosalicylaldehyde. The synthetic pathway however provides four ligands NL1A, NL1B and NL2A, NL2B, where, ‘A’ are with two imine bonds and ‘B’ are formed with one imine bond. The ligands were refluxed with [Ru(CO)2 (PPh3)2Cl2]. Some of the synthesized compounds have been characterized by spectroscopic techniques and composition of only two complexes has been confirmed so far.
