Abstract
Proteinaceous aggregates known as amyloids, are mostly associated with neurodegenerative diseases. Amyloids form well defined β sheet structure and due to their proteinaceous nature they can perform various kind of chemical activities which mimics natural enzymes in a very close way. Though the short amyloid peptide scaffolds are not comparable to the natural catalysts in terms of efficiency, they pave the way for development of short peptide based enzyme mimics. However with functionality comes the burden of controllability. In my MS thesis study I have tried to explore the modulation of functions of catalytic amyloid sequence KLVFFAL. In this study photoswitch azobenzene integrated amyloid phase azo-KLVFFAL-NH2 is shown to perform activities differently depending on the state of azobenzene on the peptide assembly surface. The isomeric states of azobenzene is alterable via 365 nm UV light. Thus I report a peptide assembly whose actions can be remotely modulated by light.
