Abstract
This study explores judgement bias and cognitive learning in free-ranging dogs (FRD’s) by adapting a spatial discrimination task conducted in their natural environment. Free-ranging dogs are domesticated dogs that do not live under direct human supervision and whose movements and activities are not controlled by humans but rely on humans for food and shelter, both directly and indirectly (James Serpell, 1995; Cafazzo, 2010). Originating from the human psychology, judgement bias test has been widely used in animal welfare research to assess their affective states. However this test have been rarely used on free-ranging dogs. To bridge this gap we designed, a multiphase training and testing protocol used to assess how dogs associate box size and side and reward value, and subsequently how they respond to ambiguous cues. 29 dogs from Assam and 33 dogs from West Bengal were trained where only 20 dogs each from both the places reached the training criterion. The findings of this study indicate that most dogs exhibit an optimistic bias, suggesting a generally positive outlook despite the urban challenges. Additionally, it reveals that FRD’s can learn and update associations based on their past experience, demonstrating goal-directed decision making, particularly when high value rewards are used. These findings contribute to understanding the cognitive and emotional capacities of FRDs, emphasising the importance of considering their affective states in welfare and management strategies.
