Abstract
An abnormal N-heterocyclic carbene (aNHC) based potassium complex, 1 has been used as transion metal-free catalyst for the reduction of primary amides to corresponding primary amides under ambient conditions. A catalytically active intermediate [aNHC-HBPin] was isolated and characterized through NMR as well as single-crystal XRD. Low catalyst loading exhibits a broad substrates scope including aliphatic primary amides with excellent functional group tolerance. Well-defined pre-catalyst and isolable intermediate along the reduction pathway have helped to sketch the mechanistic pathway for primary amides reduction.
