Abstract

This thesis is divided into two parts. Part A of the thesis deals in azulene chemistry. In this part we have provided methods for the regioselective synthesis of multifunctional azulene and also explored the effect of connectivity variation of azulene in small molecules. The regioselective synthesis of 4- and 5-substituted multifunctional azulene was accomplished by using 3- and 7-substituted 2-methoxytropones in presence of nucleophiles of varying steric bulk like ethylcynaoacetate, methylcyanoacetate and malononitrile. Substituted methoxytropones undergo nucleophile dependant abnormal nucleophilic substitution guided by the sterics of the nuclophile. We have also explored the influence of connectivity variation in azulene-BODIPY triads having an acetylene spacer and studied their optoelectronics properties. The part B of this thesis deals with the design and synthesis of thienylytriazine based conjugated porous polymers, their band gap engineering, tunable porous characterstics and gas adsorption properties. In this part we have shown band gap engineering by coupling thienyltriazine with electron acceptor systems like benzodithiazole and benzotriazole and also established band gap engineering by keeping the thienyltriaizne core intact and varying the spacer. Structural control in conjugated porous polymers have been established by tuning the reaction conditions. The synthesized polymers show highly efficient and selective CO₂ adsorption reaching as high as 16 wt% making them potential candidates for CO₂ sequestration purpose.
