Abstract
Present thesis deals with the development of organometallic/main group compounds towards activation of small molecules and catalysis. This thesis contains three chapters: Introduction, Results & Discussion and Experimental Section. First chapter (Introduction) provides a brief overview of the normal N-heterocyclic carbenes, (Bi)cyclic (Alkyl)(amino)carbenes, and abnormal N-heterocyclic carbenes in transition metal chemistry, main group chemistry, small molecule activation and catalysis. Second chapter (Results & Discussion) describes present study describing the synthesis of various organometallic and metal-free catalysts using abnormal N-heterocyclic carbenes(aNHCs). This chapter is subdivided into four different sections. First section focuses on the development of Ni-aNHC catalysed C(sp2)–H borylation of arenes and heteroarenes using pinacolborane as a borylating agent. Second project describes reactivity of Ni(II)-aNHC complexes towards molecular oxygen to result μ-hydroxo bridged dimeric Ni(II) complex. Third project focuses on the synthesis, characterisation of mesoionic N-heterocyclic imines and their catalytic application towards coupling of amides by deoxygenation of CO2. Fourth project talks about the synthesis and stabilization of imidazole radical and its uses as an organic electron transfer reagent as well as an initiator in CO2 reduction. A summary of the present investigation and possible future directions are also outlined at the end of this chapter. In third chapter (Experimental Section), detailed experimental procedures for catalyst preparation, characterization data, procedures of conducting catalytic reactions as well as control experiments have been described. The characterization details such as HRMS, NMR spectroscopic data and single crystal X-ray measurement data for all new compounds have been provided in this chapter.
