Abstract

Over the last two decades, there has been a lot of interest in understanding topological insulators that sustain a novel state of electronic matter having conducting edges and insulating bulk. Silver Telluride has been shown to be a 3-D topological insulator in ambient temperature and pressure conditions. The purpose of this project has been to understand the behavior of this material and two of its doped samples at high pressures. In Chapter 1, a brief introduction to the field of topological insulators and a brief literature survey of Silver Telluride have been presented. The experimental aspects of conducting a highpressure experiment using DAC have also been discussed. In chapter 2, the X-Ray Diffraction analysis of the samples has been done. The chapter tries to understand the origin of the two-phase transitions occurring in all the samples. In chapter 3, high-pressure Raman spectroscopy for the samples of our interest has been discussed. Signatures of the two-phase transitions are also seen in the Raman spectra of the samples, as shown in this chapter. Finally, to further validate the existence of the two-phase transitions, in chapter 4, Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations have been carried out, and changes in the electronic property have been analyzed for these samples.
