Abstract

In recent years guanosine derivatives have received considerable current interest in various areas of research, ranging from structural biology to medicinal chemistry, supramolecular chemistry and nanotechnology. Guanine nucleobase has hydrogen bond acceptors and hydrogen bond donors and depending on the conditions, guanosine derivatives can self-associate into dimers, ribbons or macrocycles. In particular, guanosine derivatives self assemble to form G-quartets in the presence of monovalent cations, which stack upon each other to form three dimensional G-quadruplex structures, which have recently explored as novel synthetic ion-channels. In this thesis we described copper catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction ('Click Chemistry') to access a series of guanosine derivatives with diverse functionality (Chapter 2). Chapter 3 includes a study towards the synthesis of guanosine-quadruplex core based star supramolecular polymer using Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP). The described technology may find important applications in designing functional materials with tailored physical properties such as synthetic ion-channels and supramolecular hydrogels.
