Abstract
The enormous applications of aryl halides in agrochemical, pharmaceutical, and organic synthesis make them notable as essential substrates. The acquired fame of these compounds in drug and multiple-step natural product synthesis demands efficient synthetic strategies for these halides. Except for some simple ones, most are not commercially available. The past few years have witnessed several works on halide exchange reactions, mainly in a homogeneous medium. However, we know that heterogeneous catalysis has not been applied to such reactions. In this work, we have performed the aromatic halide exchange reaction under visible light using a nickel-grafted Covalent Organic Framework-based heterogeneous photoredox catalyst Ni@Bpy-sp²c-COF. The extended conjugation of the pyrene ring along with C=C linkage expands the visible light absorbance range, and the bipyridine moieties anchor the Ni(II), ensuring the proximity between the photocatalyst and metal-redox center. This proximity enhances the efficiency of energy or electron transfer from the COF backbone to the metal center, resulting in the excitation of Ni centers which efficiently catalyzes diverse halide exchange reactions with efficiencies orders higher than its homogeneous analogous reactions.
