Abstract
In this work a new type of hetero trimetallic Pt-Ru-Pt complex and two monometallic Ru(II) complexes were synthesized and characterized. Their electrochemical and spectroscopic properties together with photo-hydrogen-evolving activities through water splitting were evaluated. To increase the effectiveness of trimetallic complex we have introduced an electron withdrawing – CHO group in cyclometallating ligand attached to Pt(II) moiety. The photochemical hydrogen evolution from water driven by complex 1, 2 and 3 in the presence of a sacrificial electron donor triethanolamine (TEOA) was investigated. Trimetallic Pt-Ru-Pt complex was found to be active as a H2 -evolving catalyst from water in the absence of any kind of electron relay (methyl viologen), while the monometallic complexes show no such activity. It is concluded that efficient intramolecular electron transfer (IET) is present in trimetallic Pt-Ru-Pt complex to drive the photochemical H₂ evolution from water which is absent in the other two monometallic complexes.
